My experience

my_experienceI began my career in film in the seventies gaining a place at the Royal College of Art Film School after making several short films.  The School, led by Professor Stuart Hood, was alive with challenge and questions producing some of the most innovative and groundbreaking work in a generation.

My first substantial documentary “Taking A Part”, screened on Channel 4, is held at the British and Australian national Archives and has recently been re-released by the BFI and is now available on Love Film.

“Doll’s Eye” my feature film debut, opened at the Rio Cinema Dalston in the mid-eighties.

I began my teaching and script consultancy work in the eighties working as a Film Production lecturer at the London College of Printing whilst developing a serial drama script funded by Channel 4. I later moved to Newcastle and began working at the North East Media Training Centre and with Tyne Tees Television as a script mentor for new writers.

I was awarded development funding by the regional film board to develop the feature film script “Rockabye” which I co-wrote with Karin Young. I continued to work in film production education as Senior Lecturer in script and production at Northumbria University and at Sheffield Hallam’s Northern Media School as principal lecturer in Script and Direction and acting head of school.

More recently I began to explore the use of writing as a tool for personal empowerment. Working on several projects including writing for health with HIV Aids sufferers and the Spring Lane online project for school excluded young people.  In 2011 I completed three years training as a Person Centered Counsellor and Psychotherapy.

I now work full time as a writer working in traditional and digital fiction, Script Consultant in Film and Theatre and as a Counsellor specialising in writing therapy.

Central to all my work is the belief that narrative exploration in all its many guises is central to both human understanding and good story telling.
